FOOD STYLING + PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP

We all love to take photos of our food for the ideal Instagram feed, but sometimes when we need to do it for work it can seem a bit daunting. Why would you need to photograph food for work? Well, if you’re a small food business owner, retailer, graphic designer, or even a professional photographer, often you will require to style and photograph food for your business or client. Looking at tons of food photos on Instagram and Pinterest for inspiration is always helpful, but the good news is: you can also learn food styling and photography from people who’ve been doing it for a while.

Last weekend, a room full of Sprig & Vine readers came together at The Fatty Bao in Kolkata for an afternoon of learning food styling and photography from founder Vidushi, and two major food photography experts: Saumya Gupta, and Shiva Kant Vyas of the Delhi-based organisation The Open Art Project. The Open Art Project is a collective for graphic, illustration, and photography where both Saumya and Shiva work with a number of food and beverage clients. Our participants ranged from bakers, retail store owners, to graphic designers and photographers.

In the workshop, participants learned the important basics of food styling, from creating a mood and telling a story, to choosing props and learning what angles work best in food photography in order to make everyday images look good. They also picked up camera techniques using both their DSLRs as well as their phone cameras. In fact, Shiva stressed that it’s not the device which makes or breaks a photo, so someone who wants to take this up as a hobby should not be disheartened by the investment to buy a professional camera — their phones work just fine too!

Participants also learnt about highlights and shadows, composition and framing, as well as a few basic tips on editing. They got hands on experience putting to test all they had learnt with gorgeous demo dishes graciously provided by The Fatty Bao. We ended the workshop over a scrumptious lunch, and workshop attendees stayed on till late in the afternoon discussing food and photography with their newly made friends.
